PRESENT
DAY
West Bridgfordians are a long established local Cricket Club located
on an 8 acre site in the heart of West Bridgford (Stamford Road,
opposite the Willow Tree Pub), a thriving suburb of Nottingham. The
Club has premier rated facilities including Clubhouse with new
changing rooms (constructed in 2006), showers, kitchen, clubroom and
bar, score box, sight screens, 12 pitch square, wheeled pitch covers
(new 2007), 3 outdoor
nets (newly constructed in 2006), 2 artificial match pitches. To
accommodate the 4 teams on Saturdays we also have 2 other home
grounds in West Bridgford with excellent modern facilities - The West Bridgford
School on Loughborough Road and Adbolton Lane (adjacent to the
National Water Sports Centre). We
offer the opportunity for cricketers
of all abilities to pursue their interest in local cricket combined
with an enjoyable social environment with regular events such as
barbecues, race nights, live music, Real Ale etc.
Today the majority of the cricket is
played in League competition and the Club has 4 representative XI's in
the Gunn & Moore
South
Nottinghamshire Cricket League, Divisions
B, D, G and M. We have one team in the
Newark Alliance Sunday League
Division 3
and also play some friendly
and cup fixtures on Sundays. Whilst the Club is keen to take part and
compete successfully we are an amateur setup and enjoyment is the
primary objective.
Details of Senior Indoor Cricket Nets for
the 2011 season can be found on the
Indoor Nets page. Prospective new members would be very welcome to attend.
West Bridgfordians
also have a well established
Youth
Cricket section and are keen to promote the development of the sport
in the local community. Teams are
entered to take part in the Nottingham Youth Cricket League and
Newark Colts
League, plus Cup
Competitions in the 2011 season - KWIK Cricket (2 x Boys Teams & 1
x Girls Team), U/10, U/11(x2) and U/12 (x2), U/13 (x2), U/14 Girls, U/14, U/15 and U/17 Nottingham Youth Cricket League.
New playing members are needed to secure
the success and future of the club - please
contact us for further
information. We hope that both Senior and Junior cricketers will be
interested in joining the Club and enjoy cricket with us in 2011 and
beyond.
CLUB HISTORY
The Club was established in 1929 as an
association of old scholars from The West Bridgford Grammar School which
was at this time located on Musters Road and subsequently moved to the
Loughborough Road site in the 1940's. Cricket was played at various
locations before the purchase of the Stamford Road ground in 1957.

1959 - THE MEMORIAL
PLAYING FIELDS,
Stamford Road, is the Association's tribute to the memory of
those Colleagues who gave their lives during the war of
1939/1945. We feel that a playing field is a happy choice which
many can enjoy and help run and maintain.
We were fortunate to
acquire the freehold of these eight acres so conveniently
situated on the fringe of West Bridgford, although the field
today bears little resemblance to that originally purchased. It
was soon put under the plough, then carefully leveled, treated
and sown with selected seed and our new ground took form.
Equipment was purchased, including a tractor, gang mowers and
roller - and this in turn necessitated garages to house them - a
turfed cricket square and concrete practice wicket were laid and
entrance gates erected. The first phase of our project could not
be considered complete without a club house and the Committee
felt that this should be of permanent construction designed in
two parts, the first to provide essential changing accommodation
and amenities for the sports sections and the second meeting
rooms and tea rooms to be added when finances permit.
Opening Day sees our
Ground in use both for summer and winter sports with a cricket,
rugby and two hockey pitches and ample room for tennis and
athletics. The turf improves with the constant care it will be
considered to be one of the best club playing fields in the
district.
The Committee
responsible for the development of the Ground started with very
little knowledge or money and the success of this scheme could
never have been achieved without the much valued advice and
support received from friends of the Association. Most generous
help and donations have been received from old scholars all over
the world, from parents of the present scholars, from local and
City shops and other business houses, from the National Playing
Fields Association, and countless others and all this help is
most gratefully acknowledged. Our scheme is not yet complete and
maintenance is costly but we are pleased to say that the expense
of the scheme so far has been met almost to the full.
The resolve and
determination to provide a worthy Memorial has been the
inspiration behind our efforts and we trust that our pride in
our playing field will be honoured and shared by future members.
