The
1st XI captained by Jon Sheard started the season in
great style recording 9 wins in the first 11 games and were
flying high at the top of Division C when they hosted Collingham,
fellow title contender on 11 July. Chasing 178 for victory we
were rolled over for 105 and this heralded the start of a 5 game
losing streak only interrupted by victory against a weak
Hickling team destined for relegation. Non availability due to
holidays etc didn’t help the situation – a total of 25 players
represented the 1st XI in the 2009 season. The hopes of the
title and promotion drifted away and in a season that had
promised so much to finish in fifth position in the League was
to say the least disappointing.
Notable performers included
Jon Sheard who topped the batting averages with 488 runs at
average of 34.86; Oliver Straw was the leading wicket taker with
24 wickets at an average of 16.29, ably supported by Kushal Shah
with 23 wickets and Aiden Bell with 21 wickets. Wicket keeper
Henry Straw weighed in with 17 catches & 4 stumping.
The new Club
2nd XI in Division D
(resulting from the takeover of Nottingham C C) was captained by
the experienced campaigner Tony Orange and things started well
with a victory in the first game of the season. However it was a
further 5 games before the next taste of victory and the team
struggled throughout the season to gain any level of consistency
– the bowling and fielding was of good standard but batting let
them down. There were no dominant teams in this league and what
normally would have been a situation of a mid table position
beckoning going into August with 5 wins under their belt, was
not the case as they found themselves in the relegation mix with
6 other teams. With the 1st XI chasing promotion player
availability was restricted and this was exasperated by holidays
– 33 different players played in the 16 games! The loss of a
closely fought game against fellow relegation contenders,
Newark, proved to be crucial and despite defeating the soon to
be crowned League champions in the penultimate game of the
season, other results meant that the team was relegated in 9th
position.
Notable performers include the
ever exuberant Joe Mitchell with 24 wickets, George Orange with
18 wickets and Nasser Hussain with 17 wickets. Chris Spragg
topped the batting averages with 323 runs at an average of
26.92.
The
3rd XI captained by Stuart Smedley secured promotion
from Division H winning 10 of their 16 games. This was a
fantastic achievement particularly in view of the cascading
problems of player availability (48 players) – this was their
fourth promotion in 5 years. Two old timers returned to the Club
and shored up the batting – Bryn Orme with 206 runs at average
of 41.2 and Pete Dawn with 141 runs at average of 35.25. Pete
Jordan, who was new to the club was the leading wicket taker
with 28 wickets, closely followed by Tom Edgar with 21 wickets
The
Academy / 4th XI
Captained by Clive Notman was arguably the most successful team
in the club finishing in third place in Division N winning 9 of
their 16 games and thereby gaining promotion to Division M for
2010. Notable performers included as always Bob Douglas
401 runs at an average of 36.45 - he also secured the
Divisional Batting award; Clive Notman 27 wickets at an average
of 12.37 and wicket keeper Tom Kirkman who won the Divisional
Keeping award.
The
Sunday 1st XI was again ably captained by Scott
Berridge and with what was primarily and Under 25 age group team
had another excellent season, gaining promotion as Runners Up in
Division 5. The title looked on until very late in the season
when lack of player availability in crucial games somewhat
scuppered their chances. Notable performers included – Henry
Straw 326 runs at an average of 108.67; Charles Garton 281 runs
at an average 70.25; Tom Hall 21 wickets; Kulvern Kandola 20
wickets; George Orange 19 wickets.
The
Junior Section continues to expand – in 2009 we had a
remarkable 217 members between the ages of 7 and 16. We ran 15
Junior / Youth teams in the Nottingham & Newark Youth Leagues -
three KWIK (softball) including 1 girls team, U/10 x 2, U/11 x
2, U/12 x 2, U/13 x 2, U/14 Girls, U/14, U/15 and U/17 giving an
opportunity for the many youngsters to take part. To put matters
into perspective, over the season we had a total of 45 adult
volunteers (19 of whom are ECB Qualified Coaches) helping at our
Thursday and Friday evening training sessions and at more than
170 junior club fixtures.
The U/12 Hardball Team were
Nottingham League Champions; the U/13 Hardball Team were runners
up in both the Nottingham and Newark Leagues and finalists in
the Newark Colts Cup; the U/13 Girls were winners of the Alsop
Trophy “Hit 4 Six” Inter Cricket Competition; the boys KWIK
Cricketers were Nottingham South League Runners Up;
The
Girls Cricket section continued its steady
development with 29 memberships. We again entered a team in the
NCB KWIK Cricket competition and the Nottingham Girls Hardball
League where they performed very creditably.
In 2009 successful fund
raising events allowed us to finally go ahead with the
installation of the new artificial match pitch at the ground,
which will be used for practice, junior matches and some senior
evening matches. The fund raising projects continue for 2010 -
great plans are afoot to refurbish the existing Clubhouse,
including a new patio and car parking area. Cricket specific
plans include the acquisition of a new motorized tandem pitch
roller , an automatic bowling machine for use in the practice
nets and a digital scoreboard. |

ECB CLUBMARK
Re-Accreditation Confirmed
August 2009
11 August 2009 - West Bridgfordians Cricket Club
after a great deal of hard work are pleased to report that we
received confirmation of our ClubMark Re-Accreditation,
maintaining our ECB Clubmark Status.
This confirms the Club's ongoing commitment to being a Safe, Effective and Child Friendly
Club.
This accreditation recognises
that the Club has achieved a position where they can deliver a
high quality of community cricket to current and future members
and specifically to young cricketers. In 2009 the Club had 217
members between the ages of 7 and 15, including 29 girls. |
|
We achieved our original ECB Clubmark Accreditation in August
2006, but inevitably as the years go on the height of the bar
has increased and we have during 2009 been working towards our
triennial renewal. This is a great achievement for the
Club and of course underpins our on-going development.

WBCC
EXPANSION - MERGER WITH NOTTINGHAM C C - OCTOBER 2008
The Club has recently
confirmed an arrangement to merge with Nottingham C C who in 2008
were running one senior team and struggling for survival. This
team will retain their position in Division D and be renamed
West Bridgfordians 2nd XI. Fixtures will continue to be played
at the ground on Adbolton Lane. With 4 Saturday League teams we
now become one of the largest clubs in the area, using grounds
across West Bridgford and offering members the opportunity to
play in a wide range of standards. We extend a warm welcome to
all the Nottingham players and everyone associated with the
Club.

POPKESS CUP FINAL 2008
WBCC 1st XI v Attenborough 1st XI Sunday 14 September
-
WBCC Won their way
through for the first time to the final of the premier
cup competition in the area, the Popkess Cup, where they
took on Attenborough from Div A. After restricting
Attenborough to 134-8 off their 45 overs (O Straw 5 for
19), on what can only be described as a bowler friendly
pitch at Gotham, the strong batting line up crumbled to
49-8 before a valiant 9th wicket partnership of 62 (Navin
& McCarroll) nearly won the game but not quite - 21 runs
short!! |

Club Report 2007 |
|
The weather in the summer of
2007 (what summer!!) was the worst in living memory and caused
considerable disruption to the cricket season. A high percentage
of both junior and senior fixtures were lost. We can only hope
for better in 2008!!! |
|
The new Changing Rooms were in
use from the start of the season and this certainly gave us an
excellent facility, the envy of all visiting teams. The next
project is the refurbishment of the existing Clubhouse and plans
are currently being drawn up by architects. Fund raising has
already started – on 5 March we had a Joint Cricket & Rugby
Sporting Dinner at the East Midlands Conference Centre
Nottingham where the guest speakers were Willie Thorne, Geoff
Miller and Martin Bayfield. |
 |
|
There was an excellent
response from local business and 400 people attended. We are
hoping that at least £4,000 will have been raised to start the
ball rolling – to put the project into perspective we estimate
that a further £60,000 to £70,000 will be required to complete. |
|

2nd XI 2007 |
The
1st XI captained by Jon Sheard had a disappointing
season, culminating in relegation to Division C. Unfortunately
only 10 of the 18 fixtures were completed due to the terrible
weather and key games against teams in the lower half of the
table were lost, leaving us to wonder what might have been!? On
the penultimate weekend of the season, a losing draw against
Gedling & Sherwood who needed a win to secure promotion, sealed
our disappointing fate.
The 2nd XI captained by Neil Dudley had a strong
team with a good mix of youth and experience. In a closely fought Division K
they secured promotion as Runners Up, winning 10 of the 11 games played. Notable
performances included Rob Stewart with 110 against Lenton Abbey and “hat tricks”
from Paul Garton against Attenborough & Mick Taylor against Lenton
Abbey. Mick Taylor took 19 wickets at an average of 9.47 winner of the
Divisional Bowling Award. |
|
The Academy XI (3rd XI)
captained by Clive Notman had another successful season gaining
promotion to Div N – the second promotion in 3 years with a
record of played 12, Won 7 lost 5. This team gives an
opportunity for the up and coming youth cricketers to play
Saturday afternoon cricket and home fixtures are played at the
school cricket ground. Notable performers included Stuart
Smedley with 102 against Broad Street; Bob Douglas 264
runs at an average of 29.33 winner of the Divisional Batting
Award.
In 2007 we started a new
Sunday League Team in the Newark Alliance. This was captained by
Scott Berridge and with what was primarily and Under 23 age
group team they stormed to the Div 6 Championship – winning 10
of the 13 games played.
|

Sunday 1st XI 2007 |
|

Under 10 Hardball Team 2007 |
In recent years the numbers in
the Junior Section have expanded considerably – in 2007 this was
again the case and we had an amazing 196 members between the
ages of 7 and 16 and 10 Junior / Youth teams were entered in the
Nottingham Youth Leagues - three KWIK (softball) including 1
girls team, U/10, U/11, U/12, U/13, U/14, U/15 and U/17 giving
an opportunity for many youngsters to take part.
We were Nottingham League
Runners Up at U/17 and U/14 - Nottingham South League Runners Up
at U/11 and South Notts Champions at KWIK (softball). 7 boys
were selected for the Nottingham Youth League Representative
Teams at U13 and U15 and 6 boys for the Rushcliffe District
Teams at U11 and U/13.
|
|
The Girls Cricket section
continued its steady development and membership numbers
increased to 25 – mainly in the age group 10 to 12. For the
first time we entered a team in the NCB KWIK Cricket competition
and they performed very creditably. Hayley Orange and Sarah
Forsyth took regular coaching sessions at the Club – Chris
Howard and Clive Notman did coaching at Abbey Road School.
Our winter practice nets
started at the Indoor Cricket Centre at Trent Bridge in January
2008 – run through to mid April. We are running 8 hours per week
of Junior coached practice nets for 80 youngsters between the
ages of 9 and 15 (all coaching is by club volunteers), plus 3
hours for Seniors. |

WBCC Girls Kwik Team at Trent
Bridge Test Match |
|
The main fund raising
achievements in 2007 culminated in the purchase of new
wheeled pitch covers excellent planning in view of the
weather - and a new non-turf match pitch (£7,500) that
was installed at the Leahurst Road end of the ground for
use by the juniors – this allowed us to make maximum
usage of the available space and allow two games to be
played on the ground simultaneously giving much more
flexibility and opportunities. A £ 3,000 grant was
received from the Lords Taverners to assist with the
purchase of the non-turf pitch. |
 |
|

 |
|
The fund raising projects for
2008 are primarily aimed at the refurbishment of the existing
Clubhouse, including a new patio and car parking area. Other
cricket specific plans include the acquisition of a new
motorized tandem pitch roller (urgently needed), replacement of
the worn out non-turf match pitch on the square and a new
practice bowling machine for use in the nets. |

ECB CLUBMARK
Accreditation Confirmed
August 2006
11 August 2006 - West
Bridgfordians Cricket Club received official confirmation from
the ECB that they had achieved the prestigious ECB Clubmark Accreditation - one of
only a select number of Clubs in England & Wales - confirming
their commitment to being a Safe, Effective and Child Friendly
Club.
This accreditation recognises
that the Club has achieved a position where they can deliver a
high quality of community cricket to current and future members
and specifically to young cricketers. In 2006 the Club had 152
members between the ages of 8 and 15, including 14 girls. |
|
The Club volunteers have worked extremely hard over a period of
the last 15 months to write and implement the required policies
and procedures within Clubmark (Child Protection, Health &
Safety, Equality, Partnerships with local schools, Codes of
Conduct etc). Club members / officials have been CRB checked and
have attended official training courses relative to all the
areas of development, safety and protection. The Club has an
active Junior Committee (est. 2001), Welfare Officer plus 9 ECB
qualified Coaches.
The single national standard
for Cricket, ECB Clubmark, has helped give structure and
direction to the development of the Junior section including the
coaching at West Bridgfordians. Having achieved this prestigious
“quality” standard this will also help raise the profile of the
Club and cricket in the local community - the Club will be
listed on the national database and in other sporting
directories which will hopefully attract new members /
volunteers / coaches / funding etc.
From here we move onwards and upwards!
|
|
CLUB REPORT 2006
The Club starts the new season very much on a
“high” after last season success - all 3 senior teams secured
promotion and the youth teams were Nottingham League Champions
at U/13 and U/14, Runners Up at U/15 and U/11 KWIK Area
Champions.
The new senior league season starts on 29
April 2006 – we are focusing on new challenges to move the
Club forward and targeting further success in 2006. We have a
few changes in personnel -
- 1st XI -
Jon Sheard takes over as 1st XI Captain –
Andy McCarroll as Vice
- 2nd XI -
Neil Dudley Captain – Paul
Garton as Vice
- 3rd XI -
Clive Notman Captain and Craig
James as Vice
You will all be interested to hear that we
have a new Sunday Club XI for 2006
– this will be Captained by Rob Stewart
with Stuart Smedley as Vice. Stuart
joined the Club this year after captaining another local club's
2nd XI for the past five years and is very keen to be actively
involved with the new Sunday XI and helping bring through our
young cricketers.
To date we have 11 confirmed fixtures for the
Sunday Club XI starting on 23 April (Gedling Colliery, Broadgate,
Attenborough, Meridian, Stanton-by-Dale, Eastwood Town, Unity
Casuals, Bahrain Camels, U/19 XI v Coaches etc). The 7 other
available dates are being filled as we speak.
The Club continues its policy to ensure that
we give a regular opportunity to the increasing number of
talented younger players coming through our Junior Section to
play both Saturday and Sunday afternoon cricket. Last year we
certainly saw the fruits of our youth policy coming through into
the senior teams – this is the future of the Club. |
| The need for New
Practice Facilities at our Stamford Road ground has
become increasingly necessary as the Club develops and grows.
The existing two bay, half carpeted constructions have served
the Club well for many years, but are now in need of
replacement. As one of the leading
Club’s in Nottinghamshire, we need to ensure that we can provide
seniors and the increasing number of youngsters with a safe
environment in which to learn / improve their cricketing skills
– the new facility will give us yet further scope to continue
our development. |

The New 3 Bay Nets Facilty |
| The Club has been actively fund
raising for a number of years and the project is now confirmed
to go ahead at the end of April 2006, so it will be ready for
the start of the new season. The cost to upgrade to a new three
bay facility (as illustrated) is £20,000 and there is still an
ongoing fund raising effort – your support is still needed. One
major fund raising event for the new Practice Nets is the
Club Dinner - 6 April at the West End
(Bridgford Avenue) – tickets £17.50/head. Please support.
Construction of the £330,000
New Changing Room Facility
(Sport England National Lottery Funding) is now well underway
and scheduled for completion in June 2006. This is a separate
building with four large changing rooms, each with their own
toilet and shower facilities, two umpire / referees rooms with
en-suite facilities, storage areas etc. With the best changing
facilities in the area we will then be embarking on
refurbishing the existing clubroom
– a refit is currently being negotiated with the brewery and is
anticipated that this will start after the new building is
completed. |
|
2005 SEASON
- SUCCESS AT ALL LEVELS FOR WEST BRIDGFORDIANS
September 2005
The Club has made considerable
strides forward in recent years and in particular the flow of
talent from the youth section has strengthened all the teams. In
the 2005 season, all three Senior teams
gained promotion and the Juniors won League titles at
U/11, U/13, U/14 and U/15 age groups |
|
Captained by Tony Orange the
1st XI had an excellent season, winning 11 of their 15
matches and gaining promotion as Champions
of the Gunn & Moore South Notts Cricket League Division C.
This is the first League Championship for the Club since 1977 –
a long time coming, but celebrated in good style at the League
Presentation Evening in November. A 35 seater coach was hired
for the excursion to Cotgrave – it became very obvious on the
journey back that the chances of the teams doubling up by
winning a “male voice choir” competition were very remote!
The 1st XI regularly fielded 5
players under the age of 19 which bodes well for the future. |

The success of the Club
development programme over the past 8 years is reflected in the
expansion at senior level, where the Academy XI (3rd XI)
Captained by Clive Notman is now well established in the G & M
South Notts Cricket League and successfully
gained promotion to Division P –
winning 10 of their 15 matches. This team gives a regular
opportunity for the up and coming youth cricketers to play
Saturday afternoon cricket and has also served to further
develop the links between the Club and the West Bridgford School
– the Club use the school cricket ground for their 3rd XI
Saturday fixtures.
Notable performances from some
of the older 3rd XI members included a career best score
of 91 by Guy Dibley and 107 by Bob Douglas against Edingley. At
the other end of the age scale, Chris Watkins (14) 91 n.o,
Stuart Teare (16) 72, Sonny Sohail (18) 20 wkts and Owen Leddie
(16) 13 wkts.
Captained by Chris Howard, the
Evening League team finished in mid table in Division 1,
the highlight being the passage through to the final of the
Nottingham Evening League Plate competition where they were
narrowly defeated.
The Club has made a strong
commitment to promoting the development of cricket in the local
community as this is inextricably linked to survival. In recent
years the numbers in the junior section have expanded
considerably – 105 members between the ages of 7 and 16 in 2005;
7 youth teams entered in the Nottingham Youth Leagues - two KWIK
(softball), U/11, U/12, U/13, U/14 and U/15 giving an
opportunity for almost all youngsters to take part.
We are now looking to build
upon the successes of 2005, when both the Under 13 and
Under 14 teams won their respective
Nottingham Youth League Championships; the Under 15’s
won the South Nottingham League but
narrowly lost in the Champion of Champions play-off final; the
Under 11 KWIK team were Rushcliffe Area Champions. Five boys
regularly represented the County Youth Cricket teams and a
further 8 boys played for the Nottingham League Representative
teams
The Club survives on the
enthusiasm and commitment of a relatively few unpaid volunteers
(club members, parents & others) who are also coaching the
youngsters to help them learn and develop the skills of cricket.
We are registered and working towards the prestigious ECB
Club Mark Standard and if all goes well this will be
achieved during 2006.
LEAGUE INSPECTION CONFIRMS PREMIER
CATEGORY
GROUND FACILITIES AT STAMFORD ROAD
August 2004
The Leagues official ground inspection took
place at Stamford Road on 2 August 2004. The Committee received the Ground
Inspection Report on 9 August 2004, confirming West Bridgfordians Cricket Club
facilities as PREMIER Category. This is excellent news for the Club as it
pursues plans for advancement up the League in forthcoming seasons.
As background, the Gunn & Moore South Nottinghamshire Cricket League has adopted
a Ground Specification Categorisation system to set and maintain standards
within the League. This exists to ensure that Club’s playing at the various
levels can expect to enjoy the benefits of facilities similar to their own and
to encourage Club’s to improve facilities. As Club’s move up the League there
are demands for higher standard facilities and if this is not achieved then the
opportunities for promotion can be restricted.
Premier category is required to play in the Premier / Divisions A & B; Advanced
for Divisions C, D & E: Basic for Divisions F and below.

HENRY STRAW'S MAIDEN
50 FOR 1st XI
21
August 2004
|
 |
West Bridgfordians 1st XI had an
excellent performance against a strong Southwell team on 21 August 2004 and this
was marked by Henry Straw’s (14 years old) memorable maiden fifty for the Club’s
senior team - records confirm that he is the youngest player in the Clubs 75
year history to score a fifty for the 1st XI.
Bridgfordians won the toss and inserted
Southwell on what looked to be a good batting track. They progressed steadily in
the face of tight bowling by Bridgfordians, reaching a total of 167 for 6
(Andrew Haynes 50*, Sam Ogrizovic 27) off their 45 overs. Notable bowling
performances came from Bridgfordians youngsters - Oliver Straw (18 yrs) 10 overs
2 for 26, Kulvern Kandola (16 yrs) 7 overs 2 for 26, Ryan Leddie (17yrs) 6 overs
for 12 runs.
In reply Bridgfordians started
slowly in the face of hostile bowling from the Southwell opening
pair of Mark Foster (11 overs 1 for 32) and Oliver Murphy (10
overs 2 for 29) both of whom have regularly played for their 1st
XI in the Premier League this season, and after 20 overs had
only scored 40 for the loss of one wicket. |
|
However patience was to
be rewarded as Rob Stewart gained fluency in partnership with Henry Straw (14
yrs) to put on 82 runs, taking the score to 88 before Stewart was out for 41 in
the 32nd over. Left hander, Andy McCarroll came to the wicket to join
the youngster and together they took the total on to 137 before Henry Straw was
bowled for 52 in the 40th over.
At this point Andy McCarroll (41*) launched a fierce attack on
the Southwell bowling dispatching it to all parts of the ground, to see
Bridgfordians overhaul the Southwell total in the 43rd over (170 for
4) for the loss of 4 wickets.

Bridgfordians Under
15’s and Under 14’s Crowned as
Nottingham League Champions 2004
West Bridgfordians Under 15’s retained their
unbeaten league record on Sunday 22 August 2004 with a strong performance
against Gedling Colliery and in doing so secured the Nottinghamshire Under 15
League title – record of played 11 won 11.
Gedling batted first in the 20 over match and
in the face of excellent bowling could only amass 60 all out – Owen Leddie 4
overs 3 wickets for 9 runs, Patrick Dickinson 2.2 overs 3 wickets for 2 runs. In
reply Bridgfordians blazed to victory in just 8 overs for the loss of one
wicket, Charles Garton scoring 42 not out in 25 balls.

U/14 XI - 2004 |
This is the second year in succession that
Bridgfordians have been the Nottingham Under 14 League Champions and the strong
team performances at all age groups in 2003 and 2004 support the development of
the Club in local cricket and gives reward to the coaches / team managers who
have committed many long hours – Under 15’s Paul Garton, Under 14’s Tim Garton,
Under 13’s Neil Dudley, Under 12’s Kevin Bratt and Tony Orange, Under 11’s John
Proctor and Alan McLaughlin, supported by Richard Teare, Stuart Leddie and Clive
Notman.
75th ANNIVERSARY
CELEBRATIONS AT WEST BRIDGFORDIANS
4 July 2004
West Bridgfordians celebrated the 75th Anniversary of
the founding of the Cricket Club on Sunday 4 July 2004, with an open house for
all past and present members at the Stamford Road ground, combining this with
the spectacle of the 1st XI Popkess Cup game against Hucknall. The
weather was kind and the occasion was very well attended and enjoyed by all. The
day also included a KWIK cricket and other fun activities / competitions for the
Clubs thriving junior section and complimentary food and drinks for all past and
present members – in true Wimbledon finals day tradition the strawberry’s and
cream were well in evidence. Well known local names who attended and have had a
great involvement in the Club in past years included Cliff Gillott, Peter
Atkins, John Wright, Mike Stock, Mike Clarke, Malcolm Clarke and many more.

Bridgfordians 1st XI match in second round of the
Popkess Cup provided great entertainment for the crowd who were treated to an
excellent days cricket. Hucknall batted first and made steady progress in the
face of tight bowling and excellent fielding, making a total of 199 all out off
their 45 overs. Notable performances were seen from Ryan Leddie (17 years) with
bowling figures of 9 overs 4 wickets for 40 runs, and the pace and agility of
Neil Dudley in the field, who belies his years - unbelievably to many Neil only
celebrates his 40th birthday in September 2004!!.
After tea, Bridgfordians set about the task of chasing the
Hucknall total in positive mode, but were pegged back by the loss of two early
wickets. There was a minor recovery before two more wickets fell leaving the
home side on 69 for 4 off 23 overs and the prospect of an uphill struggle.
Captain Tony Orange then joined vice captain Paul Garton at the
crease and the two experienced campaigners pushed on in controlled fashion
punishing the bad balls and frustrating the opposition with excellent running
between the wickets. As the total mounted frustrations grew in the Hucknall team
and there were a number of humorous exchanges in the middle, but the batsmen
remained focused on the task in hand. The 100 partnership came up in the 39th
over with Bridgfordians on 169 for 4 and the calculated move towards victory was
maintained with 22 runs off the next 4 overs, before Tony Orange was out,
stumped for 50 with the total on 191. The two shared in a match winning
partnership of 124 off just 20 overs. Ryan Leddie completed the victory by
striking two excellent fours off the last two balls of the 43rd over.
Paul Garton remained undefeated on 70.
All at West
Bridgfordians had a great day on this 75th anniversary – the
three Saturday XI’s had victories this weekend and the Club moves from
strength to strength. The Under 15’s play in the final of the Portman
National Club Championships on 12 July and the 1st XI move on
to the Cup Quarter final for the second successive year.
SHEARD BLAZES CLUB
RECORD 144 * TO KICK START BRIDGFORDIANS
22 May 2004
|
 |
After losing the first two matches of the
season in tight finishes, West Bridgfordians 1st XI travelled to
Plumtree on Saturday 22 May 2004, needing victory to raise moral
in the ranks. Plumtree won the toss and elected to bat, on what
was to prove to be a very good batting wicket. Plumtree opener
Mark Oldham was in excellent touch and raced to 113 in only 30
overs before falling to Sheard caught on the cover boundary by
Oliver Straw. They posted a total of 237 for 4 in the 45 overs –
a formidable target. It was not the best day for the bowlers but
good economy from Jon Sheard 12 overs 2 for 48 and Sam Winch
(16yrs) 8 overs for 32.
Bridgfordians started the chase in positive
manner but lost a couple of early wickets. However, opener Jon
Sheard remained positive, punishing the short ball with great
ferocity. The Plumtree pavilion was taking a severe pounding as
Sheard peppered the roof with 5 sixes, reaching his hundred in
the 28th over in classic style with another six into the
pavilion. Andy McCarroll Bridgfordians number 5 bat and wicket
keeper, who had earlier in the day had the misfortune to drop
Oldham when on 15, was taking a watching brief at the non
strikers end as Sheard blazed the ball to all parts. With the
overs ticking on McCarroll too found his best touch and reached
his 50 with three consecutive fours off Ali. Bridgfordians
reached the required total of 238 for the loss of only 3 wickets
in the 43rd over, Sheard 144 not out and McCarroll 58 not out,
sharing in an unbroken partnership of 163.
|
West Bridgfordians 2nd XI retained their
unbeaten league record with victory against Stoke Bardolph by 27
runs. Bridgford batted first and posted a total of 178 for 7
with an excellent performance by opening batsman Kev Smith who carried his bat for a personal score of 93 not out. In
reply Stoke Bardolph were dismissed for 151 with Owen Leddie (15
yrs) on debut 4 wickets for 24 runs.
|
3rd XI START WITH VICTORY
15 May 2004
The newly formed 3rd XI (Academy XI to promote the
youth cricketers at Bridgfordians) tasted victory in the inaugural match
against Shepshed Town on Saturday 15 May 2004. The game was played at
the Club’s second home ground – West Bridgford School - in Division R of
the Gunn & Moore South Notts Cricket League.

Batting first Shepshed struggled to 51 all out in
the face of excellent bowling from Dave Corner 5 for 13, Stuart Teare
(15 yrs) 2 for 3. Bridgfordians raced to the target for the loss of only
1 wicket in 16 overs with Stuart Teare on debut scoring 30 not out and
hitting a might six over long on to seal the victory.
EXPANSION PLANS GO AHEAD AT
WEST BRIDGFORDIANS
8 December 2003
The success of the Club development programme over the past 5 years has created
the need to expand at senior level to give more members an opportunity to play
regular Saturday league cricket. In October 2003 the Club applied to enter an
additional team
in the Gunn & Moore South Notts Cricket League for the 2004 season and
acceptance was confirmed on 8 December 2003 – a place in Division R.
The new
3rd XI (Academy XI) will play their home
fixtures at West Bridgford School and this will give a regular
opportunity for the players coming through our Youth / Junior Section to play
regular Saturday afternoon cricket and at the same time further develop the long
standing links between the Club and the School.
The roots of the Cricket Club are strongly interlinked with the
West Bridgford School, as the Club was originally established as an old scholars
team back in 1929. Formerly called Old West Bridgfordians, the “Old” was dropped
when the Club became open in the 1970’s, not as has been suggested when a few of
the more mature members became a little sensitive!!.
Matches were played at the School until the late 1950’s when the ground on
Stamford Road was purchased by the Old West Bridgfordians Scholars Association
in memory of those from the School who perished in the War. Quite a number of
the existing Club members are former scholars and the return to playing Club
matches at the school is a very much a “return to roots”.
Interestingly this return coincides
with the 75th Anniversary of the Cricket Club – this is to be
celebrated with an open house on Sunday 4 July when it is hoped that
VP’s, past and present members will all drop in to watch the Club game
at the Memorial Ground on Stamford Road and partake of the Club’s
hospitality during the afternoon.
UNDER 13'S WIN THE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS
COUNTY FINAL
8 September 2002
On Friday 6 September West Bridgfordians U/13 Cricketers defeated
Caythorpe in the final league match of the season to win the South
Nottinghamshire U/13 Cricket League Championship. Batting first in a
match of reduced overs, due to the bad weather, they scored a creditable
81-7 (Luke Burns 22, Daniel Gunn, 17, Charles Garton 16). In reply
Caythorpe were restricted by accurate bowling to a total of 70 for 8
(Henry Straw 3 for 20, David Bratt 2 for 11).
Having won the South Nottinghamshire league, West Bridgfordians
progressed to the Champion of Champions Final, which was played on
Sunday 8 September against the winners of the North Nottinghamshire
League, Carrington Cavaliers, hosted by Wilsons Cricket Club.
Carrington Cavaliers won the toss, elected to bat and quickly found
themselves in difficulties when West Bridgfordians opening bowler, David
Bratt, dismissed both openers in his second over. Cavaliers found it
very difficult to score against consistently good bowling supported by
excellent fielding and as the pressure mounted the wickets started to
tumble. Meranz scored a steady 29 before becoming one of four run-out
victims - direct hits from Henry Straw and Charles Garton left the
batsmen way out of their ground. On a good batting surface Cavaliers
total of 84 all out, looked eminently gettable!
West Bridgfordians reply got off to a good start when 16 runs were
scored without loss from the first two overs but then Tariq struck,
dismissing five batsmen in his next three overs - ending his spell with
5 for 23. Bridgfordians slumped to 41 for 5 off 7 overs and the game was
in the balance before a cameo clean hitting innings by Uumar Hussain (33
not out) supported by Stuart Teare (8) and Tom Dowsett (4 not out) saw
West Bridgfordians home to a well-earned and convincing victory (85 for
7) with 5 overs to spare. Bev Browitt, League Secretary, presented the
Champion of Champions Trophy to the West Bridgfordians captain, Henry
Straw.

teams has won the County Champion of Champions Final and illustrates the
growing strength of the Youth Cricket at West Bridgfordians. The U/12’s,
managed by Tim Garton, also won their League in the 2002 season and
progressed to the County Finals where they finished in third place,
after losing to the eventual winners in the semi-final. The U/11’s,
managed by Neil Dudley, finished joint top of the South Nottinghamshire
League and missed out on a place in the Champions final by the smallest
of margins when a run-rate calculation was employed. The two U/11 Kwik
Cricket teams finished as joint runners-up in the South Nottinghamshire
section

FARNDON STUNNED BY THE TEBBUTT BROTHERS - HAT TRICK HEROES
Saturday
5 May 2001
West Bridgfordians 1st XI had a very memorable day on Saturday 5 May, in
the first game of the season in the South Nottinghamshire Cricket
League, Division 1C. The game was played away at Farndon, a village
close to Newark, Nottinghamshire.
The TEBBUTT brothers from West Bridgford - Ben(26) and Tom(22) both took
'HAT TRICKS' for West Bridgfordians in the Farndon innings and moreover
all the hat trick wickets were clean bowled!
Farndon were 52 for 2 when in the 17th over Tom Tebbutt struck,
dismissing Newham, Sugden and Shaw with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th balls of
the over - all clean bowled! By the end of the 24th over Farndon had
slumped to 66 for 7, when West Bridgfordians Captain, Ben Tebbutt
decided to bring himself on to bowl. Two runs were scored from his first
3 balls and then the second hat trick finished the Farndon innings off,
when Ben clean bowled Bestwick, Wilson and White.
The Farndon innings closed at 68 all out and WBCC proceeded to knock the
runs off without loss for a 10 wicket victory - Ian Mellor (Vice
Captain) 35 not out and Jonathan Martin (age 17) on his debut for the
1st XI, 22 not out.
An amazing day's cricket!
